If You Give a Writer an Idea

If you give a writer an idea, he’s going to tell a story.
If he wants to tell a story, he’ll have to write it.
If he wants to write it, he’ll need some coffee (or tea).
If he wants some coffee (or tea), he has to find a coffee shop.
If he wants a coffee shop, he’ll have to look on his phone.
If he looks on his phone, he’ll be distracted.
…What was he doing?
Oh yes, telling a story.
If he tells a story, he’s going to want to publish it.
If he’s going to publish, he’ll want a publisher.
To get a publisher, he’ll need an agent.
If he wants an agent, he has to query.
…Query a lot.
If he finds an agent, he’ll have to pitch the manuscript.
… Pitch it a lot.
If he (and the agent) land a publisher, he’ll have to work with an editor.
If he works with the editor (and retains his sanity), the story will get published (maybe).
If the story is published, he’ll want to sell a million copies.
If he wants to sell a million copies, he’ll have to help market it.
If he wants to help market, he’ll have to post until he’s blue in the face, and sign books until he gets carpal tunnel, and pound his head into a brick wall (or so it seems).
If he markets enough (and is lucky), the book will be a success.
If the book is a success (or even if it isn’t), he’ll get an idea for a sequel…
